Mind Changing – The philosophy of I Ching in modern life

Mr. Bernard Chan, GBS,JP

Chairman of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS)

When talking about the I Ching (Book of Changes), many people may relate it to fortune telling, but in fact, I Ching is a Chinese classic, a literature with fundamental principles covering many disciplines such as medicine, cosmology, natural science, social science, art and even life philosophy.  Sixty-four hexagrams have no absolute good or bad, and they explain the fundamentals of change, in both environmental and social contexts.  Maybe you need not be too fixed in your ideas, one is recommended to be open and change your perspective whenever is necessary.  There are different personal attitudes and situations in respective to different times and place.  It is time to change.

The last hexagram 64 “Before Completion”.  It is said that the water and fire are not good being put together, as heat and cold cannot be adjusted. This is a stern warning, suggesting that people should be careful when acting. Although things have not been done at this stage, we should enjoy the process and understand the possibility of change. The so-called Hope is under that silver lining.  Things in life do not always turn out the way we wish, we can overcome negativities as long as we try our best, with hope.

The Book of Changes covers wisdom of the ancient sages; a profound yet valuable classics. This “易圖思 mInd CHangING” mindfulness coloring book introduced a simple coloring as a mindful practice and learn those wisdoms at the same time. We are to understand philosophical advice about how to face different changes we encounter in our daily life.
