I Ching Philosophy

I Ching (The book of Changes) is a book that relates the nature of the heaven and earth to understand humanities.  The way of heaven/universe is in the “origin of all things”, “the great origin, the beginning of all things, is the heaven” (“乾·彖“); the way of the earth is where “Everything is born” , “To the joint heaven and earth, all things are born, it is according to the law of nature” (”乾· 彖“); the way of human beings is “to be a million things”.  This so-called: “The way of establishing heaven Yin and Yang (positive and negative forces).  The way to establish the earth is to be soft and strong. The way to establish a person is to be benevolence and righteousness”. The ‘Book of Changes’ is broad and profound, respectably the head/prime of the Five Scriptures, expansive yet inclusive also. How may we grasp the core meaning of the “Book of Changes”?

In the original, “I (易) means Change has Tai-chi which creates two rituals Yin and Yang.  The two instruments generate four images, and four images generate eight trigrams, the eight trigrams determine good and bad luck that bring about great causes.  Therefore, there is no Dharma image greater than heaven and earth, no flexibility greater than the four seasons, no county image bearing brightness greater than the sun and moon, and no lofty image greater than wealth. There is nothing greater than a sage who prepares things for use and sets up utensils to benefit the world”.  It is impossible to understand I Ching if without the visible image!  What is “image”?  The image refers to the image and symbol explained in the book.  There are three meanings:

1. Refers to the eight trigrams, the sixty-four hexagrams and the three hundred and eighty-six lines are the so-called hexagrams and lines.

2. Refers to the things symbolized by the eight trigrams, such as the heaven of the Creative (乾卦), the water of the Abyss (坎卦).

3. Refer to the specific things mentioned in the lines of the hexagram, such as the “Dragon” in the Creative (乾卦), the “Female horse” in the Receptive (坤卦).

I am happy to hear that Lissa Lam has learned much of the philosophy of the “I Ching” and created the “易圖思 mInd CHangING” mindfulness coloring book.  Her invitation of social elites as well as many others from many different social backgrounds to co-create new images for the “I Ching” sixty-four hexagrams combined as a mindfulness practice method.  This is a novel way to create new path for modern people to understand the wisdom of the I Ching, the merit is beyond measure!  Best wishes to the book project and hope to benefit many!
