In recent years, Mindfulness has occupied a very important position in the local and western mental health fields. Mindfulness practice can cultivate individuals’ self awareness of thoughts and emotions, body sensitivities, so as to deepen understanding of ourselves. We then learn to manage our emotions and stress more effectively through self focused practice mind. This practice let us cultivates our mind of being unbiased, open and helps the individual develop resilience in face of adversity, accepts them with “Grace“.
On philosophy toward worldly matters, Mindfulness and the I Ching “Book of Changes" coincidentally have comparable views on life and the universe. I Ching is one of the oldest ancient text in China. It is the foundation of both Taoism and Confucianism; prime of the five Confusian classics. Its central idea describes the universal changes of the world; explain them with relativity of the two elements of yin and yang. Encourage us to face the ever-changing world with the attitude of “walking with time”. This is the same as the wisdom of the above-mentioned good and the ordinary, and calmly confronts all kinds of worries in life.
In addition to the similarity of life and world view, I Ching both and art therapy has prevailed in the West and many Asian countries such as HK in recent years. Creative art therapy is psychotherapy with participants through paintings, music, dance moves, drama and text creation. The process of artistic creation not only helps us to devote ourselves to the “present moment”, but also helps us experience beautiful things in life. Hence, cultivate our appreciation of the world. Through non-verbal expression and creation, art therapy can help us to unlock our ability and creativity in things, and cultivate our positive emotions, let us give new meaning to the big things in life, let our minds and hearts become more resilient to stress.
The mindful practice, artistic creation and appreciation, meditate on wisdom of the I Ching benefit us when facing imperfections of life in a broader spirit, let us explore the possibility with an open attitude, and develop self resilience in adversity. If we can combine the three into one, we can truly demonstrate the Asian culture which always advocate the treasurable value of coexistence of all things. Indeed a genuine splendor.
